180 international students
I delivered an interactive-ish session to 180 international students last Friday, to enable them to produce a UK style CV.
The technology played up - but I managed to get my flashdrive to work on one of the projectors, and it was freezing cold in the lecture theatre. Wired up to a microphone was much easier than being tethered to the podium - which I don't like, as it is very high, and I can barely see over the top of it - and it was good to be able to walk about among the students. With students from more than 18 countries present in the audience, I just had to hope they all understood - there was lots of nodding and positive affirmation from them, but....
At the end, when I had finished, the applause was spontaneous and went on for several minutes, which was embarrassing, as the previous speaker had had no applause, but I did feel that perhaps, they had appreciated the interactive bits, and that they now felt confident to at least start a UK style CV. It was gratifying to pick up an email this evening [I haven't been in the office all week, as I am delivering a 'Graduate Futures' course down at UCE] from one of the students saying that he had redone his CV, and wanted it checking. Success!!
En masse, 180 international students are scary - but I am glad I did the session, and look forward to working with them again - but in smaller groups next time!
